This past February, on his one-year anniversary as Secretary of State, Secretary Kerry victoriously reclaimed his personal Twitter account, @JohnKerry.  He wasted no time jumping back into action and engaging with his followers from all over the world about his experiences as the United States’ top diplomat.


#SecretarialSelfie: A First Time for Everything

After discussing global climate change with a group of students in Jakarta, Indonesia, Secretary Kerry grabbed his smart phone and joined with them in the audience to take his first-ever 'selfie’ to commemorate the occasion.

#UnitedforUkraine: Solidarity with the Ukrainian People 

In March, Secretary Kerry visited the Shrine of the Fallen in Kyiv, Ukraine, where he paid his respects to the victims of the recent violence and aggression in Ukraine.      


#WorldCup2014: Fever Hits the State Department

While Secretary Kerry’s plane stopped to refuel in Cape Verde during a trip back from Africa, he had a chance to kick around the soccer ball with staff , chat about the upcoming World Cup in Brazil…and even take some calls from his foreign counterparts in between.


#BringBackOurGirls: U.S. Sends Team to Help

After a group of Nigerian schoolgirls were kidnapped by the terrorist group Boko Haram, Secretary Kerry, on behalf of President Obama, jumped on the phone to Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan.  He pledged the United States’ support in helping to bring back the girls safely, including sending a security team to help assist the Nigerian government’s ongoing efforts.


#OurOcean2014: A Threat Too Great to Ignore

In June, Secretary Kerry hosted his “Our Ocean” Conference at the State Department, which brought together nearly 400 participants from more than 80 nations, including government officials, scientists, private companies, and leading international institutions, to join together in determining concrete actions that can help protect ocean ecosystems.


#USChina: A Little Music Diplomacy

During Secretary Kerry’s trip to Beijing for the U.S.-China Strategic Dialogue, he received a special request from China’s Vice Premier Liu Yandong to play some music with the performers at the Great Hall. The Secretary dusted off his guitar skills and joined right in with the group.


#USAfrica: Welcoming 51 Leaders to the State Department

In August 2014, President Obama and Secretary Kerry welcomed leaders from across the African continent to the State Department for a three-day U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit, the first such event of its kind. The Summit’s focus was on fostering stronger ties between the United States and Africa.


#USDC: The Secretaries Break Ground

In September, Secretary Kerry was in good company when he was joined by five former Secretaries of State – Hillary Clinton, Colin Powell, Madeleine Albright, James Baker, and Henry Kissinger – at the State Department, to break ground on the brand new U.S. Diplomacy Center, a state-of-the-art museum and education center, that will dedicate 40,000 square feet to bringing the story of American diplomacy to life.


#ActOnClimate: A Global Commitment

In December, Secretary Kerry traveled to Lima, Peru where he addressed the United Nations Climate Change Conference regarding the need for a global commitment to tackle the growing threat of climate change.

My wife and I follow John Kerry with interest because he was married to Julia Thorne my wife's cousin for a number of years. Plus we know that he has this nations heart at its best interest. Have not seen him since his wedding to Julia so many years have passed. We admire John and we do hear about him thru other Thorne family members. We wish him and his family a wonderful Christmas!! This coming year will be hard for the Administration but we known internationally that we are in good hands.Warm wishes, Candace Thorne and Anthony Canton
