U.S. Condemns Terrorist Attacks in Brussels

The United States condemns the terrorist attacks that occurred in Brussels, Belgium today.

In a statement, Secretary Kerry called the abhorrent attacks an assault against the Belgian people and the heart of Europe. He said, “Our thoughts are with all those in Brussels, including the injured and the loved ones of those who were killed, and with the first responders and security personnel who are working tirelessly to keep Brussels safe.” The Secretary also reiterated the United States’ firm support for our Belgian ally -- as well as all of Europe - in the face of this tragedy.

Speaking in Cuba, President Obama took a moment to comment on the attacks and offer the thoughts and the prayers of the American people to the people of Belgium. He said, “…this is yet another reminder that the world must unite, we must be together, regardless of nationality, or race, or faith, in fighting against the scourge of terrorism. We can -- and will -- defeat those who threaten the safety and security of people all around the world.”

The United States government is closely monitoring the situation in Brussels and remains in contact with our counterparts in the region. The U.S. Embassy in Brussels continues to make every effort to account for the welfare of American citizens in the city and stands ready to provide whatever support the Belgian Government may require in the days ahead.

In a security message to U.S. citizens in Brussels, the U.S. Embassy shared a reminder that Belgium is at a threat rating of Level 4, or “serious and imminent attack.” United States citizens injured by attacks in Brussels should call Belgian crisis center at 1771 or US Embassy at 028114000. The U.S. Embassy in Brussels recommends other United States citizens in Brussels shelter in place and avoid all public transportation.

More than being a tactic to sow fear, these incidents hope to incite a response by governments against all Muslims living inside their borders to further their false narrative that "the West is at war with Islam", in the hopes that inciting such a response will alienate Muslims in these nations and foster recruitment to jihad, as cause and effect.

Unfortunately various politicians internationally, as well as a couple notable candidates for President have been proving this to be a potentially effective strategy by their anti-Muslim rhetoric/policy agenda.

Folks talk about all the various ways the coalition seeks to target Daesh , but come Nov. when one of these misguided candidates loses the US election by a landslide to a former Secretary of State who actually knows how to properly respond to a terrorist with a strategy to defeat them every way conceivable; our very democratic process will prove to everyone paying attention that reacting with social and political stupidity is not a part of America's strategy, while proving Daesh's to be morally bankrupt and serves only to turn Muslims against those who would hijack Islam for their genocidal social and political purposes.

A memorial to attack victims with a Belgian flag and flowers is set up outside the stock exchange in Brussels on Tuesday, March 22, 2016.
