Take Action for Our Ocean -- Join the Meetup!

Are you passionate about ocean preservation and working to turn back the tide on the negative effects of climate change? Do you want to help get the word out on how we can take action for our ocean?

If so, our upcoming Our Ocean Conference is providing a unique opportunity for you to get involved.

Secretary of State John Kerry will host the third Our Ocean Conference in Washington, D.C., on September 15 and 16 to catalyze actions to protect our ocean from these threats and to empower a new generation to lead the way toward a healthy and sustainable ocean. This year’s Our Ocean conference’s theme is “Our Ocean, One Future” with a focus on the key ocean issues of our time –- marine protected areas, sustainable fisheries, marine pollution, and climate-related impacts on the ocean.

As part of this year’s Our Ocean conference, we are inviting engaged members of the State Department’s social media community to join us for a social media meetup during the two-day conference. Through these conferences, we strive to inspire the next generation of leaders, entrepreneurs, scientists, civil society, and engaged citizens to identify solutions and commit to actions that will protect and conserve our ocean and its resources. Help us raise awareness of the problems facing our ocean and the actions we must take to protect it by applying to attend the 2016 Our Ocean Conference in person. You can help shape the conversation in real-time as a participant in the Department of State’s Social Media Meetup.

State Department Meetups are in-person gatherings of people who engage with the Department through social media, including Twitter, Facebook, Google+, Tumblr, Instagram, and Snapchat. Meetup participants will have the opportunity to attend the 2016 Our Ocean Conference at the Department of State and will also have the chance to attend the "Our Ocean, One Future" Leadership Summit at Georgetown University. If selected, you could join some of the State Department’s most engaged social media users on-site and will have the chance to see stakeholders from around the globe come together and commit to action for ocean preservation and climate change.

Apply to join us in Washington, D.C. and help lead the conversation on social media using the hashtags #OurOcean and #ActonClimate

Applications are due by Wednesday, August 31, 2016, at 5:00 p.m. EDT.

Dear Secretary of State Mr.John Kerry. Unfortunately the human being, day after day, are devastated our oceans. We have many small and big ships going back and forth worldwide (cargo ships and tourism). My question: What to do with so many trash, that they are throwing away in our oceans, destroying the marine biodiversity? Thanks! Ronaldo Scheer.

Ocean protection is another way of protecting our lives in so far as we are uncontestably dependent on ocean creatures. Our ocean conference is welcomed to help participants to engage in sensitization all around the world , and starting whithin every community.
